5 ways to keep yourself motivated

KRC Murty, Vice President, Head of End User Production Services – CTO, Deutsche Bank Ag, India, shares his thoughts on how to keep yourself energised. By Shweta Gandhi

With over 22 years in the IT industry (BFSI sector), KRC Murty knows the importance of self-motivation and rejuvenation. No matter how much you love your job, monotony will set in and a clever leader is one who always ensures he’s on his toes and challenged to keep going. KRC, as he’s known among colleagues and friends, is from Visakhapatnam, the beach city, but he spent his growing up years in various parts of the country, and as a result is really multi-lingual. He is currently working at Deutsche Bank Ag in India, where he is responsible for end user support, deployment of new products, market data services and audio visual support and services. He was recently awarded as a Data Centre and Infrastructure Icon at CIO Power List 2016. Here, he talks about the strategies one can use to get out of a rut.

1. Don’t wallow in the mood
“There are days when you suddenly feel de-motivated and lose interest in your routine. Don’t let this set-in for long as this may do more harm than good. Quickly bounce back and find out what makes you happy. I personally switch to what I like the most—doing a quick two-minute Yoga practice (breathing exercise), listening to music, or taking a quick walk to de-stress. It is important to get away from the negative mood quickly and not drag it on for too long. Let the stress not set in at all. Seek help from friends and move into a positive discussion.

“Reading some good books on a regular basis; the ones I like are Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson, The One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson, You Can Win by Shiv Khera and The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma. They give you a lot of insights and keep you on your toes. This is the best therapy in today’s world. Also, one of the most important things is to unplug from the digital world and stay away from gadgets for a set amount of time. If you can really do that, you will feel the difference.”

2. Travel to expand your horizons
“Travel is truly important in our lives. Everyone should travel and explore different places; if you are open and willing, travel will make you an incredibly well-rounded human being. I personally make sure I travel to various places and explore new boundaries with family. The best gift we can give to our family, especially kids, is travel. Meeting people from exotic cultures will teach you that the way you’ve been looking at the world isn’t the way everybody else does. In fact, you might be dead wrong about it. Seeing it for yourself brings a healthy reality check.”

3. Pay attention to your body
“It is important to keep yourself fit and in the best of health. Don’t let lethargy set in at any point in time. Choose a sport that you like, be it squash, cricket, football or even running, cycling, swimming or just simple walking. Do not miss this at any cost as this will keep you going and also remove all toxins that our body accumulates from all the parties we attend and the junk food we eat. This will keep your mind and body at its best.”

4. Participate in CSR activities
“It’s surely time to give and do our bit for society. Participate in CSR activities and donate your time to a noble cause or simply for the benefit of the society around you. Today, every organisation is doing their bit for CSR, and you too should participate without fail. Join noble activities, even on your personal capacity, and do your bit. The level of satisfaction it gives you will take you a long way. Earn some blessings and boost your self-image.”

5. Network and build your brand
“It is very important to build a network of friends, colleagues and industry friends. The advent of blogs, Facebook and Twitter have enabled anyone and everyone to become known; connect in almost real time directly with colleagues and friends; and build relationships across the globe. Now, making an unforgettable first impression in-person is no longer the only way to establish your brand. Yes, your brand. Our personal brands are in the spotlight every day for everyone to see online. Are you putting your best foot forward? Maybe it’s time for some personal branding. Do not ignore this and start today, if you haven’t already.”
