With more and more brands churning out affordable high performance smartphones every day, Indian consumers are spoilt for choice. From VR enabled powerhouses to smartphone cameras that are trying to replace your DSLR, July saw it all. Here are the phones vying for the top spot.

Asus ZenFone AR

1. Asus ZenFone AR
The much awaited Asus ZenFone AR is the first smartphone to support Google Daydream and Tango, and comes equipped with a whopping 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of inbuilt storage. The Taiwanese company has also introduced variants with 6GB RAM and internal storage capacity ranging from 32GB to 256GB. The phone boasts of a 23-megapixel rear camera that has a f/2.0 aperture, 6P Largan lens, and the TriTech Focus System, which has features like dual-PDAF, laser autofocus, OIS, EIS, motion tracking depth and sensing, and infrared (IR) rangefinder. Additionally, the phone also has an 8-megapixel front camera with an f/2.0 aperture, 85-degree wide-angle lens, and dual-LED flash, offering HDR and real time beautification modes. Besides the fingerprint sensor on the home button, the phone has a premium-crafted metallic diamond-cut body, along with a 5.7-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The ZenFone AR runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC, having a 3300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

Nubia N2

2. Nubia N2
Chinese smartphone brand Nubia has been steadily capturing the Indian market with its range of camera-centric smartphones, and the Nubia N2 is the latest model unveiled. Armed with a 16-megapixel front camera with Samsung 3P3ST sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and an 80-degree wide-angle lens, the phone is specifically designed for high quality selfies. Besides this, it also has a 13-megapixel primary camera with a Sony IMX258 sensor, f/2.2 aperture, dual-LED flash, and PDAF, along with a massive 5000mAh battery to its credit. The phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC processor and comes with 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of inbuilt storage expandable up to 128GB via a memory card. Lastly, the phone, available in Champagne Gold and Black Gold colour variants, also has a 5.5-inch HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 267ppi, 2.5D curved glass, and on-cell lamination.

Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra

3. Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra
Available in black, white, and gold colour options, the latest smartphone from the Japanese technology giant has a metal body with pronounced bezels at the top and bottom. It sports a a 6-inch full-HD display, but the phone’s highlight are its cameras, which include a 23-megapixel Exmor RS image sensor primary camera with hybrid autofocus, 24mm wide-angle lens, f/2.0 aperture, 5x zoom, and HDR mode, and a 16-megapixel Exmor RS sensor front camera with front flash, 23mm wide-angle lens, f/2.0 aperture, OIS, and autofocus features. Additionally, the phone is powered by a 64-bit MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core SoC processor with Mali T880 MP2 900MHz GPU and 4GB of RAM. Battery is expandable up to 256GB via a memory card and the phone runs on runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with a 2700mAh battery.

4. Gionee F103 Pro
Further expanding its repertoire in the Indian market, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Gionee recently launched its latest model, the F103 Pro, loaded with features and upgrades. Part of the Gionee Fashion series, the F103 Pro runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor, having 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of inbuilt storage, expandable to up to 128GB via memory card. Additionally, it also has a 5-inch HD IPS in-cell display with a pixel density of 294ppi and 2.5D glass protection, and packs a 2400mAh battery. The F103 Pro also boasts of a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, PDAF, and 0.1 seconds focus, and a 5-megapixel front camera, equipped with a number of beauty filters designed for clicking high quality selfies.

Honor 8 Pro

5. Honor 8 Pro
Unveiled in India after a long wait, the latest smartphone from the Chinese electronics firm Huawei is all set to provide stiff competition to other brands dominating the market. Available in Navy Blue and Midnight Black colour options, the phone’s retail box can be converted into a Google Cardboard Viewer for a VR experience. The phone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, besides sporting 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage. The phone also supports a memory card that packs in an additional 128GB, taking the total memory to 256GB, which is a feature built specifically for Indian users. The Honor 8 Pro also has a 5.7-inch QHD LTPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and a fingerprint scanner located at the back of the phone. The phone packs a big 4000mAh battery, and has a dual camera setup that has created much noise. There are two 12-megapixel primary cameras with f/2.2 aperture, laser autofocus, LED flash, and 4K video recording, and an 8-megapixel front camera equipped with a 77-degree wide-angle lens.
