Give yourself an energy boost with these self-care tips that keep stress and anxiety at bay.
Improve your quality of life by setting aside some much-needed ‘me time’. You’ll thank us later.
1. Make the most of your commute time
In reality a large chunk of our day is spent in travel. It’s also the guaranteed time you have to yourself. So make the most of this self-imposed me time. Use it to catch up on reading, listening to music or a podcast, learn a new language, catch up with friends, or practice meditation. Do things that stray away from work, will help you decompress, and make you feel good about yourself.
2. Set aside time for creativity
This is a great way to recharge your mind and bolster your creative process. Stress, tension and mind blocks are often caused by our chaotic daily routine. Be mindful of this and take time out to give free reign to your creative side. You will feel liberated, inspired and clearheaded. Read, write, draw, play an instrument, cook, sculpt, take up a hobby…the list is endless. The idea is to find a way to cut through all the madness and ground yourself in something that brings you joy. Create a situation where you can explore a free flow of ideas and express yourself.
3. Reflect and be grateful
Take a look at the week gone by. Assess what you achieved and acknowledge the victories, however small. Get into a positive frame of mind by considering all the things you have to be thankful for. Many successful leaders have stressed the important role living a gratitude-filled life has had on their well being. Positive gratitude increases energy and enthusiasm, thereby decreasing burnout and increasing engagement.
4. Get a good night’s sleep
This might seem like an obvious one but many people sacrifice sleep so as to cram in more things to do into their day. Cutting down on sleep forces our brain to work overtime, hindering our ability to make decisions and be creative (among others). It also causes us to feel exhausted (no matter how little we’ve done), mentally and physically. So sleep in that extra hour so that you get a good eight hours of sleep so as to awake energised and charged up.
5. Create a morning routine
Invest some time in the morning with yourself; it’s a luxury you can afford to give yourself. Try some yoga exercises to wake up your body, release stress, and centre your mind. You can also do any other physical activity like swimming, cycling, planning tennis, etc. It’s a great way to stay in shape and kick-start your day on a positive note. Then recharge your body with a hearty breakfast and you’re ready to conquer the day!
