As much as men like their whiskey neat and vodka on the rocks, we don’t say no to a well made martini either, be it shaken or stirred. That’s because as great as stiff drinks are, cocktails are just so much more fun! However, most of the cocktails we like have dangerous amounts of artificial sweeteners or sugar added along with a number of other calorie rich ingredients, none of which are particularly great for the body. This is why we bring you five healthy cocktails that you can make easily at home for yourself or your guests.
1. Pimm’s Cup
This refreshingly light British drink combines lemon and ginger with the spicy, fruity flavours of a gin based liquor called Pimm’s No. 1 Cup. In order to make this drink you need to mix together a couple of shots of Pimm’s with slices of orange, lemon, and muddled mint and then let it chill in the fridge. Once that’s ready, pour the concoction into a tall glass filled halfway with ice, put in a few thin cucumber wedges, and you’re done! As delicious as it is healthy, the drink is also extremely low in calories.
2. Turmeric Orange Margarita
Putting an uncanny twist on the classic margarita, this wonderful concoction is loaded with Vitamin C-rich oranges and antioxidant-rich turmeric, which will probably make it your go-to drink from now on. First of all, rub a wedge of orange on the rim of a cocktail glass and roll it in a mixture of chilli powder, ground turmeric, and salt to give the cocktail the unique flavour it’s known for. Now fill a cocktail shaker with ice, orange juice, tequila, triple sec and simple syrup and shake it up, before pouring it into the glass, and serving chilled, garnished with lemon or orange wedges.
3. Champagne Limoncello
This simple and delectable cocktail made using a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur called limoncello is sure to be great for your tastebuds as well as your health. To start off, rub a cut lemon wedge on the rim of a cocktail glass and roll it gently in sugar so as to barely coat the rim. Now stick a lemon wedge or one strip of lemon rind into the glass, add two shots of Limoncello liquor and a dash of lemon juice. Finally, top it off with chilled champagne, and voila, you have one of the most elegant and healthiest cocktails to touch your lips.
4. Coconut Water Gin & Tonic
Instead of the regular gin and tonic concoction, this uses electrolyte-rich coconut water as its base, serving two purposes. The naturally sweet coconut water mixed with a dash of lemon juice is not only heavenly in taste, but also keeps you hydrated and almost completely eliminates any chances of a nasty hangover. To make this refreshing drink, fill one-fourth of a serving glass with ice and pour in equal parts gin, tonic water and coconut water, and the juice of half a lime, before stirring it up and garnishing with mint or basil leaves, and it’s ready to serve.
5. Superfood Spiked Apple Cider
The healthiest drink on this list, not only is it free of refined sugar, it is loaded with antioxidant-rich spices that also make your home smell amazing. Mix a cup of apple juice with cloves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, anise, ginger and lemon zest, and heat it in a saucepan till it’s moderately warm. Now strain the mixture into a cocktail glass, add twp shots of dark rum, and set to chill in the freezer. Once it’s chilled enough, garnish with a stick of cardamom, and serve!
