Check out the mean machines launched at the recently concluded festival that showcased the latest in automotive design and engineering. By Satyaki Sarkar
Taking place from February 1 to 5, the 32nd edition of the International Automobile Festival in France was nothing short of spectacular. Incredible cars and uber cool next-generation motorbikes filled the venue, with automobile manufacturers from all over the world vying to showcase their masterpieces. The 32,000-square-foot exhibition space at the renowned Hôtel National des Invalides was the venue, and played host to the fearsome mechanical beasts. Here are our five favourites!
1. Opel GT Concept
Following closely in the footsteps of its predecessor, the experimental 1965 GT model, this car combines stylish minimalism with a hint of splendour. There are no side mirrors or door handles, as the cockpit offers a view of the exterior through fitted cameras on the car’s body, while a touch pad near the roof controls the doors. As impressive as it looks, however, the inside is even more awe-inspiring. The lightweight, highly functional, and flamboyant car weighs around 2,200 pounds, and comes with a 145 hp, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that churns out 151 ft lbs of torque. Equipped with a sequential 6-speed transmission, this ferocious beast can go from 0 to 62 mph in under 8 seconds, and has a top speed of 215 kmph.
2. Jaguar I-Pace
Bringing with it the class and suavity that Jaguar is known for, the I-Pace SUV is actually the company’s first electric car and it certainly lives up to expectations. The aerodynamically designed vehicle comes with a highly efficient hood scoop and air ducts, with individually contoured seats, a floating dual touchscreen centre console, and heads up display on the dashboard. As far as the specifications are concerned, the I-Pace is fitted with dual motors dishing out a massive 400 hp power and 516 ft lbs of torque, letting the car go from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 4 seconds. In addition to that, the lithium-ion battery, which lets the car run for a total of 220 miles per charge, takes only 90 minutes to be pumped up to 80 per cent.
3. DS E-Tense
This green car, both for its body colour and eco-friendly nature, is packed with goodies. The attractive cabin boasts of a steel dashboard, tulip-shaped steering wheel, upholstery that took 800 painstaking hours to develop, and a sound system comprised of as many as nine Focul Utopia speakers! The zero-emissions motor that it is fitted with can produce around 402 hp and about 380 ft lbs of torque, letting the car accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, to reach a top speed of 155 mph, while the battery capacity is roughly 185 miles on full charge.
4. Renault Trezor
With the Trezor, the first thing that undoubtedly catches your attention is the futuristic clamshell-like roof that lifts up to let you enter the car. Once you’re inside, the gorgeous red interior including the beautiful leather upholstery and dashboard pulls you in. Speaking of the dashboard, it comes with striking overlays of ash and red, along with an integrated touchscreen display. As far as performance is concerned, the Trezor boasts of an incredibly advanced all-electric power-train, and revolutional autonomous driving technology, powered by dual motors pushing out 350 hp, letting the car go from 0 to 62 mph in under 4 seconds, with the option to drive it in three modes, Neutral, Sport, and Autonomous.
5. Aston Martin AM-RB 001
Partnering with Red Bull, the Aston Martin AM-RB 001 is a cutting edge automotive beast that looks like something between a futuristic space fighter and a next generation racing car. The carbon-fibre coupe is equipped with an ungodly V-12 engine that churns out a mind-numbing 1,000 hp power, and a power-to-weight ratio of 1 hp to 2.2 pounds, letting this monster get from 0 to 200 mph in just 10 seconds. Designed to be at the forefront of every kind of performance yardstick known to man, the supercar boasts of a cutting-edge transmission technology, and several avant-garde aerodynamic enhancements that make it one car you will definitely be watching out for.
